Forensic Technician I - DNA Casework

Salary: $22,182.00 - $41,046.00 annually

Serve as a Forensic Technician I in SLED's Forensic Services – DNA Casework Department. Perform a variety of technical support duties for DNA analysts and facilitate maintaining smooth operation of the department.

Duties:

  • Perform quality control and maintenance procedures for departmental instruments as outlined in the DNA Casework Operations Manual, and record maintenance and quality control records properly.
  • Receive, inventory, record, and perform quality control procedures on reagents according to department protocols. Prepare reagents, solutions, and standards, and monitor expiration dates.. Maintain all reagent records properly.
  • Review and triage cases submitted for DNA analysis and ensure each is routed to the proper team. Receive, document, handle, inventory, transport, and store items of evidence.
  • Conduct regular inventory of laboratory equipment and supplies. Assist with ordering of laboratory reagents and supplies.
  • Under supervision of a qualified analyst, perform analytical techniques to assist with validation of new procedures.
  • Maintain cleanliness of laboratory work areas including biohazardous waste. Perform necessary safety-related functions.
  • Provide expert testimony in a court of law as it pertains to involvement in a case.

Requirements:

Minimum and Additional Requirements:
  • A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college/university in a biological, chemical, forensic science or a related field.
  • Must have a basic understanding of science and scientific principles involved in serology and/or DNA analysis.
  • Must have a working knowledge of computers and commonly utilized programs and must have good communication skills.
  • Position may require overnight travel for training or court and requires the ability to lift up to 20 pound.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in a laboratory environment.
