Computer Forensic Specialist

Salary: $42,271.00 - $62,164.00 Annually

Under supervision performs forensic examination and evaluation of computer hardware, software, electronically stored data and other computer related evidentiary materials to assist with investigations of criminal activity, performs related work as assigned.

Duties:

  • Provides advice and analytical support to police detectives and prosecutors.
  • Researches, locates and secures hardware and software files from a variety of technology for the specific devices
  • Provides expert or witness testimony to prosecutors, court personnel, and investigators as to the proper procedures for digital media, video and cell phone analysis.
  • Analyze acquired data and look for deleted files
  • Examines computers, cellular phones and other digital media
  • Secure media from external data contamination (write-block); acquire a forensic physical image of media; analyze physical image using forensic software, carving for deleted photos, videos and documents
  • Recover, secure and analyze digital and analog files from both computer (PC) based and proprietary digital video recorders (DVRs)
  • Prepares data for evidence distribution, investigators; archive and court testimony
  • Documents evidence
  • Creates reports which include analyst observations, analysis and technical results of examination.
  • Conducts proficiency testing, along with forensic hardware and software validation and verifications to maintain ASCLD/LAB accreditation

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications
  • A Bachelor's Degree in computer sciences, forensic science or a related field and three years experience in computer science or a related field OR, any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must obtain an Arizona driver's license by date of hire and maintain it throughout employment. Pre-employment background investigation and polygraph. Must be able to become certified on ACJIS computer system within one year of employment.
Considerable knowledge of:
  • Applicable federal, state, county and or city statutes, rules, regulations, ordinances, codes, administrative orders, case law, departmental policies and procedures, as well as legal terminology and court processes
  • LANs, WANs, and computer systems to include security and networks; internet, web browsers, search engines and e-mail systems
  • Standard computer software including databases, spreadsheets, word document, and operating systems and the most recent forensic software
  • Research methods related to forensic analysis
  • ANSI ASCII character sets as well as binary, decimal and hexadecimal
  • Evidence collection, preservation, packaging and shipment procedures
Skill in:
  • Examining and analyzing computer hardware, software, and electronically stored data pertaining to law enforcement investigations.
  • Identifying, analyzing and documenting evidence of crimes.
  • Providing expert or witness testimony.
  • Restoring deleted files and accessing secured data.
  • Recognizing evidence of criminal activity.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with staff, coworkers, and representatives from other agencies.
  • Effective communication skills using all forms of communication
  • Prioritizing tasks to meet deadlines.
  • Use of word processors, computer systems and other office machines
  • Report preparation
Ability to:
  • Compose correspondence dealing with technical and complex matters
  • Exercise sound independent judgment on a variety of problems in accordance with established departmental policies and procedures
