Serologist / DNA Analyst

Hamilton County Coroner's Crime Laboratory, Cincinnati, Ohio

Salary: The salary for this entry level position is $42,000.

The laboratory is accredited under the ANSI-FQS International (ISO) assessment as of June 2015. The laboratory serves approximately 43 police agencies in a region of about 1 million people including the city of Cincinnati.

Normal working hours are 8 to 4:30 Mondaythrough Friday with no “On-call,” however, there is the possibility of working flexible hours including nine hour days to have a day off every other week. The examiner will join a staff of four other Serologist / DNA analysts. The analyst will be required to comply with safety, quality control, and other administrative criteria of the ANSI-FQS accreditation program. Duties:

  • Analyzes stain material by antigenic, genetic, orother biochemical means, and compares results to tests done on samples of known origin.
  • DNA analyses will be done incompliance with the current version of the FBI DNA Quality Assurance Standards;
  • Provides written and verbal reports to investigators and attorneys;
  • Participates in the laboratory quality assurance program which includes compliance with laboratory accreditation and safety requirements;
  • Provides advice and assistance to law enforcement investigators, such as coordinating the collection of known samples from suspects and victims;
  • Appears in court as an expert witness;
  • Maintains proper custody of physical evidence by maintaining required records, and following established laboratory procedures for the safe handling of biohazardous materials.

Requirements:

  • Analysts must have a Bachelor of Science degree in forensic science or an equivalent natural science which includes courses in biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, and statistics.
  • Must pass a criminal background investigation and have no history of substance abuse.
