Duties:

Under general supervision, performs a broad range of difficult and complex professional laboratory analysis of physical evidence in a general or specialized field of Criminalistics; interpret results of chemical and biological tests; and performs related work as required.

Requirements:

Experience and Training Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelors degree in a natural, physical, or forensic science or closely related field and two years of full time experience in applying scientific laboratory techniques in a laboratory setting and/or major crime scene investigation; or a masters degree in a natural, physical, or forensic science or closely related field and one year of full time experience in applying scientific laboratory techniques in a laboratory setting and/or major crime scene investigation.
  • Additional qualifications for specific areas are as follows:
    • Breath Alcohol
      • Minimum requirement to obtain certification as a Forensic Analyst of Alcohol: (Reference: NAC 484C.020). A baccalaureate degree in a natural, physical or forensic science; with twenty-four semester hours in the study of chemistry at an accredited college or university; or eighteen semester hours in the study of chemistry at an accredited college or university and 1 year of full-time experience related to the forensic analysis of alcohol.
    • Biology
      • Minimum educational requirements: (Reference: The Federal Quality Assurance Standards for Forensic DNA Testing Laboratories). A bachelor's (or its equivalent) or an advanced degree in a biology, chemistry, or forensic science, related area and successfully completed course work (graduate or undergraduate level) covering the following subject areas: biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology; and course work and/or training in statistics and/or population genetics as it applies to forensic DNA analysis.
To be eligible, top candidates will be required to undergo an in-depth, thorough, extensive and detailed background investigation:
  • Must pass a drug test
  • Must pass a background investigation
  • Must be willing to submit a set of fingerprints
  • Must complete and submit a personal history statement
  • Must pass a Computerized Voice Stress Analysis (CVSA) examination
  • The Washoe County Supervisory Employees Association (WCEA) covers the Criminalist position. The provisions of the prospective collective bargaining unit therefore cover this position.
The Ideal Candidate
  • A minimum of three years of laboratory experience, which may include formal instructions, experience as a court qualified expert, and successful completion of proficiency testing.
  • Experience and knowledge in an accreditation process.
  • The ability to work within a team environment and to effectively communicate scientific findings with internal and external customers.
  • Knowledge of laboratory procedures and the use and theory of laboratory instrumentation.
