Course Objective
This course will teach an understanding of the fundamental theories of physical evidence, practically applied; and the legal consideration involved in its collection, preservation and presentation in court.
The solution of crime focuses increasingly upon discovery of various forms of physical evidence at crime scenes and subsequent scientific analysis. There is a need to improve knowledge of law enforcement personnel in regard to physical evidence. These personnel should be skilled in the recognition of physical evidence and be capable of preserving it for laboratory processing.

- Legal Aspects of Physical Evidence
- Theory and Technique of Crime Scene Search
- Photography: Technical, Flash, Available Light, and Painting-With-Light Photographic Techniques; Crime Scene Photography; and Photographing Evidence
- Casting and Reproduction of Impressions, Tools Marks, and Prints
- Fingerprints: Recovery, Classification and Preservation
- Blood and Physiological Fluids
- Physical Evidence in Death Investigations
- Hair, Fibers, Soils and Other Trace Evidence
- Firearms Distance Determination
- Gunshot Residue Collection
The course will culminate with a practical exercise whereby the class will utilize a team approach at a realistic crime scene. Team members will present all their findings the following day to a District Attorney and Criminalist who will critique their work. This is a true judge of how well the participants have learned the skills and techniques given in the course.
