Latent Print Supervisor

Job Class Specifications for: LATENT PRINT SUPERVISOR

Class Specification Schematic Number: 4155607

Class Summary:

Positions in this class supervise, schedule, assign and evaluate the work of technical personnel involved in latent print identification. Train staff and Police Officers in methods and practices in fingerprint and related criminal identification work and on new laws, procedures and policies created in the field of fingerprint identification; train employees in the use of the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS); and compile and evaluate statistics regarding latents entered.

Distinguishing Characteristics of the Class:

This class represents the supervisory level in the Latent Print Examiner class series. The Latent Print Supervisor class differs from the Latent Print Examiner in that the latter class is responsible for collection and preservation of latent prints at crime scenes to ensure adherence to proper operating procedures, while the Supervisor's primary responsibility is supervision of staff. Positions in this class assign work, set work priorities, conduct performance evaluation, and approve sick leave and vacation requests.

The work requires an advanced knowledge of the Automated Fingerprint Identification System and Henry System of fingerprint classification, fingerprinting collection and preservation processes, record maintenance methods, and identification and photographic equipment and materials. The work involves developing and implementing standard operating procedures and instructions to be used by subordinates in photography, record keeping, and the identification, classification, collection and preservation of prints. Departmental guidelines and identification procedures and methods govern work activities, however, the class utilizes judgement in determining and establishing procedures governing the work operations of subordinates. This class typically sets own priorities and deadlines and receives specific direction in only unusual circumstances. Superiors are typically informed of problems that may become controversial.

Personal contacts are within the department for the purpose of coordinating activities and exchanging information and with other law enforcement agencies for establishing policies and procedures and providing information.
