Job Class Specifications for: IDENTIFICATION TECHNICIAN

Class Summary:
Positions in this class perform identification activities such as taking fingerprints, and classifying and entering fingerprints into the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS).
Distinguishing Characteristics of the Class:
This class represents the first level in a three level Latent Print class series. Positions in this class obtain and process fingerprints of arrested persons to determine identity and any prior criminal record; and assists in the collection and preservation of latent fingerprints at crime scenes. The class differs from the Latent Print Examiner in that the latter class has the responsibility for collecting latent prints at crime scenes and for ensuring adherence to appropriate operating procedures. In addition, the Latent Print Examiner is technically more knowledgeable and experienced in latent print collection and preservation procedures and techniques.
The duties and responsibilities of this class require a working knowledge of the AFIS system, the Henry System of finger print classification and attention to detail and precision to ensure the preservation and quality of prints. Assignments involve following specific instructions according to standard departmental operating procedures. The class receives on-going supervision from the Latent Print Supervisor. Crime scene activities are coordinated through the Latent Print Examiner. Guidelines are specific and detailed; most work is checked by the Latent Print Supervisor and any deviations or problems not covered by standards are approved by the supervisor. Supervisor sets priorities and deadlines. Personal contacts include members of the public, incarcerated individuals and crime victims for fingerprinting and law enforcement personnel for the purpose of exchanging information.
