DNA Analyst

Duties: The DuPage County Sheriff's Office in Wheaton, Illinois is currently seeking an enthusiastic, responsible, dedicated, disciplined, hardworking, and well-rounded DNA analyst to work full-time in our crime laboratory.
The Crime Laboratory at the DuPage County Sheriff's Office is a world-class, state-of-the-art facility that was awarded international accreditation in 2006 - becoming only the second-county crime laboratory in the United States to earn this prestigious recognition.

- Accepts custody of evidence; evaluates evidence for proper packaging, seals, and storage; maintains proper chain of custody records.
- Conducts preliminary tests of suspected biological evidence.
- Conducts instrumental and/or chemical confirmatory tests of biological evidence.
- Extracts, amplifies, and profiles human DNA; establishes statistical significance to DNA profiles generated.
- Conducts scientific work in coordination with other experts having different areas of expertise; prepares and protects evidence for subsequent forensic analyses.
- When qualified, performs related technical or scientific work having relevance to the aforementioned responsibilities.
- Maintains adequate, appropriate, and legible scientific documentation.
- Reports scientifically accurate, responsible, and unambiguous written conclusions in laboratory testing reports.
- Provides reliable, accurate, and objective expert scientific testimony in courts of law.
- Gives professional presentations to members of the public.
- Gives professional presentations to other related professionals.
- Provides training to law enforcement and court officers.
- Reports deviations from documented methods; reports possible quality system failures or weaknesses.
- Consults with law enforcement or court officers in person or by phone when necessary.
Scientists in the crime laboratory work a 37.5 hour week. Flexible scheduling is available upon completion of orientation.
Crime laboratory scientists rarely participate in crime scene investigations unless circumstances require it.
Persons to be considered for this position will be subjected to a criminal history check and background investigation. A minimum one-year probationary period will be served, which will commence on the first day of employment.
Requirements: ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS: Must have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Forensic Science, Chemistry, Biology, or other natural science or related program. Academic credentials must be compliant with the FBI Director's QAS standards.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Candidates for this position must have at least two years of unsupervised DNA case work experience in an accredited crime laboratory with past court testimony experience. Persons with no formal DNA analysis experience or candidates who have not worked in an accredited laboratory will not be considered for this position and should not apply.

- Proficiency with the following software: MS Word, MS Excel, and MS Outlook.
- Proficiency in scientific or technical writing.
- Working knowledge of applicable ASCLD/LAB accreditation standards.
- Ability to work neatly and safely in a laboratory setting.
