Identification Technician

Salary: $20.75 - $24.83 Hourly

Duties: Under limited supervision, to examine, develop, prioritize, and preserve physical evidence at crime scenes; to document crime scenes with photographs and video; to process evidence; and to do technical related work as assigned.
Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only):
Under limited supervision, to process crime scenes for and preserve physical evidence; document crime scenes with photographs and video; process evidence; collect and preserve evidence including bio-hazardous materials for laboratory examination, for court presentation; provide court testimony; attend pre-trial conferences; prepare exhibits for court use; conduct crime scene and limited laboratory examination of latent fingerprints, palmprints, footprints, bite marks, glove and cloth impressions, tool marks, and the like; receive, package and secure evidence retrieved by and received from others; examine and clear loaded firearms; examine deceased persons for trace evidence and fingerprints; attend autopsies; search arrest and fingerprint files; write reports of activities; take photographs of persons and accident scenes; take fingerprints of persons arrested and non-criminal fingerprints; type and file fingerprint cards and other types of identification materials; compile and maintain records; prepare periodic reports. Duty hours may vary, subject to recall, and overtime is to be expected. Perform related work as required.
Requirements: Graduation from high school and two years of post-high school education, preferably in a course of study in criminology or the forensic sciences. One year of crime laboratory and/or crime scene work may be substituted for one year of college education. COLLEGE TRANSCRIPTS MUST BE SUBMITTED WITH APPLICATION. Must have vision correctable to 20-20. Must be able to pass color vision test. License or Other Requirements: Possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator's license issued by the State of Iowa.
Required Special Qualifications:
THIS IS A HIGH-STRESS, TEAMWORK POSITION PERFORMED UNDER LESS THAN IDEAL WORKING CONDITIONS AND A WORK SCHEDULE INCLUDING NIGHTS, WEEKENDS, HOLIDAYS AND SWING SHIFTS. REQUIRED TO BE ON CALL 24 HOURS A DAY.

Selection Method:
- WRITTEN EXAMINATION: Job knowledge and basic skills written exam will be administered to all qualified applicants. Qualified applicants will be notified of the date, time and place of exam.
- APPLICATION SUPPLEMENT RATING: Application Supplements of all qualified applicants will be evaluated and scored.
- Applicants passing the written examination and the background evaluation will be invited to participate in an oral examination.
- DRIVING RECORD CHECKS: Applicants not meeting City driving standards will be eliminated.
- BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION: The Police Department will conduct a thorough background investigation including polygraph examination on those applicants certified by the Civil Service Commission.
