Duties: Under general direction, perform first-line supervisory functions over the APD Laboratory staff and control the full operation of the lab, to include latent print detection, fingerprinting techniques, photography, and evidence handling. Control inventory on laboratory supplies and initiate requisitions for these supplies many of which are procured by use of the Municipality of Anchorage issued procurement card. Operate the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) and SPEX Forensics system for the purpose of conducting searches of a common database of a vast number of known finger print and palm print records for the purpose of identifying perpetrators of crimes. Prepare and author complex reports on matters of ten print and latent print identifications. Testify in court as an expert witness relating to fingerprint identifications.

Requirements: Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Physical Science, Management or a related field and three years of experience in latent print examination.

Substitution: Additional basic police experience in latent print examination may substitute for the degree on a year for year basis.

Must possess a current Latent Print Examiner certification from the International Association for Identification or equivalent.

NOTICE: Initial testing will consist of a Nelson/Denny Reading Comprehension exam and a Personal History Questionnaire, (preliminary to the background investigation), assessment interview, Job Interview, and Background Investigation.

Passing results of the Nelson/Denny Reading Comprehension exam are valid for one year from the date of the tests. These test scores/results may be used when applying for other positions with APD. Current APD employees are exempt from the Nelson/Denny Reading Comprehension exam.

As a condition of employment, the person selected will be required to successfully complete a drug test prior to beginning work. Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of policies, practices and procedures pertaining to latent fingerprint work; the Henry System of fingerprint classification; management, supervisory and administrative techniques; photo lab operation; and various files and systems associated with police investigative work. Skill in latent print examinations; identification of individuals through comparison of fingerprints (palm prints and footprints). Ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of subordinate personnel; prepare and present evidence in court; work effectively with others.
