Duties: The City of Fayetteville has an immediate opening for a Forensic Technician. Duties include: Perform a variety of technical tasks in the collection and preservation of criminal evidence, photography services, and fingerprint identification functions within the Police Department; analysis and comparison of evidence and, to perform other technical duties related to the assigned area of responsibility.
- Respond to various types of crime and accident scenes; record physical description of scene; gather and photograph evidence; obtain account of events from relevant parties.
- Examine surfaces and process for prints using various mediums and methods e.g. powders, chemicals, fuming, photographing with alternate light source etc.
- Examine and process for other forms of latent traces of evidence including hair, blood, DNA, paint, tool marks, and other items; use variety of methods to collect and preserve evidence.
- Conduct preliminary testing of blood, semen, and other items.
- Collect, process and log film and digital images taken at crime and accident scenes and other department photographs; photographs persons, property and crime scene evidence.
- Photograph persons arrested for crimes; develop, down load, print and file photographs; photograph evidence and other objects and activities in the lab and at crime scenes as requested.
- Operate and maintains a variety of photographic and developing equipment including 35mm and digital cameras, video cameras, copiers, viewers and photographic software and other printing equipment.
- Process special requests for fingerprints and related information; examine, analyze, evaluate and process physical evidence gathered at crime scenes; prepare report and results. Provide information to the Police Department and other agencies regarding cases and actions.
- Travel from crime scene to crime scene; operate a motor vehicle.
- Establish, maintain and update a variety of files and records relating to evidence collection and preservation, criminals and suspects; search files in identifying suspects; cooperate with other law enforcement agencies in identification matters; prepare evidence for court presentation; testify in court as required.
- Prepare required reports; crime scene sketches and document findings; forward results to appropriate agencies.
- Maintain logs, inventory, assignments and production and work sheets as required.
- Stay abreast of trends and innovations in the fields of crime analysis, photography, fingerprint, identification, and forensics; attend meetings, conferences, and seminars.
- Report safety hazards.
Requirements: Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience: Two years of experience in law enforcement, crime scene investigation or forensics to include the collection and preservation of criminal evidence; photographic and/or fingerprint analysis skills.
Training: Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice, Latent Evidence, or Crime Scene Investigation, Forensics or a related field.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate valid driver's license.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, fingerprint classification certification from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, latent fingerprint classification certification from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Must be able to maintain vehicle insurability with the City of Fayetteville.
This position is subject to a background investigation conducted by the Police Department.
May be required to take a polygraph.
