Duties: The Forensic Science Technician provides input on determination of relevant factors, development of methodology for projects, and determination of effective resolutions. Creates reports and facilitates development of new knowledge through creation of online and on site continuing education courses. Responds to inquiries and resolves matters of relatively low complexity. Responsibilities require some basic decision making and resourcefulness within available guides and precedents. Work effort impacts client services, program and project image, with nominal liabilities. This position does not relate to DNA or genetic analysis.
Responsibilities are functional in nature, and performed under general supervision. Specific tasks include, but are not limited to:
- Maintains knowledge of forensic professional principles, legal and/or reporting requirements affecting area of responsibility, and adheres to forensic industry and government standards.
- Assists and/or follows direction of the Assistant Director to create professional development initiatives and to determine the course of customer service.
- Gathers data, assesses information, considers options, proposes resolutions, creates reports and translates data into content for forensic professionals.
- Talks with vendors or customers by telephone or in-person.
- Responds to questions regarding programs and services.
- Assists with or completes forms for services, products, etc.
- May test and/or evaluate forensic systems, equipment and/or programs, (for example, AFIS, IBIS, or microscopes) then confers with or advise the Forensic Science Initiative regarding results, concerns, effectiveness and alternatives.
- Will research and assist in the composition of online courses in a variety of forensic disciplines.
- Keeps records, laboratory notes, photographs, data files and other documentation of work conducted.
- Contacts vendors and clients to establish rapport, understanding and/or inform, as well as to facilitate use of the organization’s programs, services, and/or products.

Requirements: Skills, Knowledge Abilities:
- Maintains skills in, or knowledge of, forensic professional principles, legal and/or reporting requirements affecting area of responsibility.
- Knowledge of laboratory processes and procedures.
- Skilled at using scientific rules and methods to solve problems.
- Skilled at communicating effectively in writing as appropriate for the needs of the audience.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
- Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
- Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume.

Education
- Bachelor Degree Forensic Science, Bachelor Degree Natural Sciences, or Equivalent combination of related education and experience
Experience
- Experience in Operational science lab or forensic sci. provider, including internships and experience in Scientific and techinical writing
