Salary: $3640 - $4583 / month

Duties: The Crime Scene Investigator will perform a variety of highly skilled technical criminal identification tasks both in the field and in the laboratory. This includes developing, comparing and identifying latent fingerprints; searching for, collecting, preserving and identifying trace or other physical evidence found at crime scenes; photographing and sketching crime scenes; preparing comprehensive and technically correct reports; and testifying as an expert witness in court proceedings. The work environment may involve high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress that require a range of safety and other precautions, i.e., working at heights, frequent/extended exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to hazardous chemicals and blood borne pathogens. Crime scene searches are often performed by extensive kneeling, stooping, reaching and climbing. The crime scene investigator will handle objects of varying weight and shape and must, therefore, be in good physical condition.

Requirements: B.A / B.S. degree from an accredited college in one of the Natural Sciences or Forensic Science is preferred; Criminology or Criminalistics is also acceptable. Two (2) years full-time experience in law enforcement identification work to include crime scene investigation and/or the examination of latent print evidence is preferred but not required.

Work requires being available various shifts, holidays and being on call-out status during off-duty hours. Off-duty call-out response time from home to the police station is 45 minutes.

Must possess the ability to:

  • Read maps and learn the geography of the City;
  • Observe and recall details;
  • Learn photographic techniques and methods including the use of a variety of film, digital equipment, lighting, filtration, infrared, and ultraviolet techniques;
  • Learn to use powders and chemicals to process scenes for latent fingerprints and subsequent lifting/photographing;
  • Learn standard techniques for classification, development, transfer and chemical processing of fingerprints;
  • Learn the techniques for gathering and preserving physical evidence;
  • Learn the rules of evidence and court methods and procedures;
  • Learn the hazards and safety precautions related to crime scenes, chemicals and equipment used in processing evidence;
  • Learn gunshot residue testing
  • Present accurate and professional testimony in court; and
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with associate personnel, court personnel and the public.

IAI Certification as a Latent Print Examiner and Crime Scene Analyst is preferred.

Must be able to pass drug screen, polygraph, psychological and background investigation.

Must possess a valid Texas Driver's license or be able to obtain one within 30 days of hire date.
