Crime Scene Specialist III

Salary: $41,974 - $61,630 per year

Duties: In the Crime Scene Response section, the Crime Scene Specialist III works the most serious and complex of crime scenes, including homicide and other violent crimes by providing technical support to Police Officers and forensic scientists in analyzing, photographing, collecting, preserving, and presenting physical evidence. Work is performed in the field, including crime scenes and autopsies.

In the Evidence Processing Unit, the Crime Scene Specialist III collects biological evidence from evidentiary items, processes evidentiary items for latent prints, and digitally preserves prints. This position is located in the laboratory.

Candidates will be required to demonstrate the ability to perform job-related tasks as part of the Police Department’s selection process. Candidates will also be required to obtain one of the following professional certifications within 9 months from the date of hire:

International Association of Identification:

  • Crime Scene Technician (CST)
  • Crime Scene Investigation (CSI)
  • Crime Scene Analyst (CSA)
  • Senior Crime Scene Analyst (SCSA)
  • Bloodstain Pattern Analysis
  • Forensic Photography

American Board of Criminalistics:

  • Technical Specialist (S-ABC)
  • Diplomate (D-ABC)
  • Fellow (F-ABC)

Requirements: To meet the minimum qualifications for this recruitment, you must have:

  • Three (3) years of experience in crime scene processing or the chemical processing of evidentiary items for latent prints in the laboratory, including two years at the level of Crime Scene Specialist II or its equivalent.
  • An associate’s degree in biology, chemistry, forensic science, criminal justice or a related field.
  • An equivalent combination of relevant experience and education may be considered.
  • Working irregular hours, second and/or third shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings may be required.
  • Positions in the Police Department must meet the polygraph and background standards that are appropriate to non-sworn positions. The general factors for disqualification are listed at http://www.phoenix.gov/joinphxpd/civildisq.html

A well qualified candidate will possess the minimum qualifications plus:

  • Professional certification from the International Association for Identification or the American Board of Criminalistics.
  • Experience in a crime scene, or a bachelor’s degree (or higher) in criminal justice or a hard science (e.g., biology, chemistry, etc.).
