Evidence and Property Custodian I

Salary: $2,493.00 - $3,346.09 per month, ($2,566.91 - $3,444.91 Effective 01/01/09)

Duties: Positions allocable to this class are responsible for ensuring that personal property held by the Sheriff's Department are protected from loss or damage and that the disposition of all personal property is maintained appropriately.

  • Receives, issues receipts for and inventories personal property items held at the Custody facility.
  • Lists, files and records the location of all personal property held at the Custody facility.
  • Maintains all personal property records including found property, reports, property control cards, and property release forms.
  • Releases personal property to inmate client, relative, authorized representative, or federal or state prisons, after appropriate verification of inmate release or transfer.
  • Arranges for the transfer or disposal of unclaimed items.
  • Responds to inquiries regarding the disposition of inmate property; and reviews, investigates and reports on claims of missing inmate property.
  • Completes data entry tasks into a computer tracking system indicating receipt, inventory, disposition and/or release information relative to inmate personal property.
  • Ensures that property is prepared for transfer to Central Property and Evidence within the time period allotted and that all Property Control Cards are completed.
  • Transport items to a warehouse or to headquarters.

Requirements: Six months' paid experience involving store keeping, stock, property or warehouse inventory and inventory maintenance.
