Forensic Technician I/II/Senior

Salary:

I Level - $3387 - $4135 approximentaly per month
II Level - $4325 - $5280 approximentaly per month
Senior Level - $4899 - $5981 approximentaly per month

Duties: Under direct supervision, performs basic forensic work in criminal investigations by taking photographs at crime scenes; gathering, preserving, and processing physical evidence both at crime scenes and in the field; and performs related duties as required.

Candidates may be appointed at the I, II, or Senior level, depending on the candidate's qualifications and the needs of the department.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  1. Responds to crime scenes as part of a team of forensic technicians;
  2. Participates in the recovery and processing of physical evidence from crime scenes, accidents, or in a controlled laboratory environment.
  3. Documents all activities during investigations and prepares detailed written reports. Diagrams crime scenes and collects DNA evidence.
  4. Prepares court exhibits; testifies in court. Performs departmental photographic work, involving digital storage and printing.
  5. Operates Live Scan Fingerprint Capture equipment on an as-needed basis.

Requirements:

Forensic Technician I: Employment Standards

    1. Completion of 15 semester or 22 quarter units from an accredited college or university in forensic science, evidence technology, or a closely related field; coursework must have included at least one class in fingerprint identification, processing crime scene evidence, or digital forensic photography; or,
    2. six months of experience in a law enforcement setting performing fingerprint identification duties (i.e., lifting, examination, and comparison of latent fingerprints; analyzing, classifying, and indexing), or processing crime scene evidence, or using digital forensic photography; or,
    3. a combination of training, education, and experience that is equivalent to one of the employment standards listed above and that provides the required knowledge and abilities.

    Knowledge of: fingerprint identification, classification, and analysis techniques; or processing crime scene evidence; or digital forensic photographic techniques and digital photography software.

    Ability to: keep logs, records, and reports; write detailed narrative reports using correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

Forensic Technician II: Employment Standards

    1. Two years of experience that included performing fingerprint identification duties (i.e., examining and comparing latent fingerprints; analyzing, classifying, and indexing); digital photography, including the use of software to enhance images; and extensive forensic lab and field expertise in a law enforcement setting; or,
    2. two years of experience performing duties equivalent to the classification of Forensic Technician I with Santa Barbara County; or,
    3. a combination of training, education, and experience equivalent to one of the employment standards listed above and that provides the required knowledge and abilities.

    Knowledge of: fingerprint identification, classification, and analysis; report writing and recordkeeping methods; photographic and identification techniques used in law enforcement; extensive forensic equipment knowledge.

    Ability to: observe details to evaluate and compare fingerprints; use a variety of photographic equipment; make court presentations; work with minimum supervision in the field; write detailed narrative reports using correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

    Skill in: Use of computer software programs to help enhance prints recovered from a crime scene and/or developed through the use of physical/chemical techniques.

Forensic Technician, Senior: Employment Standards

    1. Two years of experience in digital photography, including working with digital photography software, performing fingerprint identification duties (i.e. analyzes, classifies & indexes), and extensive forensic lab and field expertise in a law enforcement setting, and one year of experience using CAL ID, the statewide automated fingerprint system; or,
    2. one year of experience performing duties equivalent to the classification of Forensic Technician II which included significant experience using CAL ID the statewide automated fingerprint system with Santa Barbara County; or,
    3. a combination of training, education, and experience that is equivalent to one of the employment standards listed above and that provides the required knowledge and abilities.

    Knowledge of: comprehensive photographic and identification techniques used in law enforcement; fingerprint identification, classification, and analysis; various computer software use and techniques.

    Ability to: classify fingerprints accurately; analyze and accurately trace latent fingerprints; take clear and accurate photographs, using a variety of equipment; testify effectively in court; work with minimum supervision; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with law enforcement agencies; understand, interpret and apply laws, statutes and policies.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL LEVELS: Incumbents in this class must be able to distinguish all colors in the visible spectrum. Positions in this class are subject to being called back to work after hours and on weekends. Prior to final appointment, a background investigation, including a polygraph examination, will be conducted. A valid California Class C Driver's License is required at time of appointment.
