Crime Scene Shift Supervisor

Salary: $53,435.20 - $79,809.60 per year

Duties: The Crime Scene Shift Supervisor provides first line supervision to the Crime Scene Specialists who collect, preserve, analyze, and process physical evidence. Work is performed in the field, including crime scenes and autopsies, and in the laboratory. Types of crime scenes include person crimes, such as homicides, sexual assaults, robberies, as well as property crimes and traffic accidents. Evidence includes biological, latent fingerprints, trace, firearms, tire and shoe impressions, drugs and tool mark impressions.

Incumbents supervise Crime Scene Specialists and may process, photograph, and record crime scenes showing correlation between evidence and scene, perform various chemical and photographic processes in the laboratory or the field to develop and preserve evidence. In addition, the Shift Supervisor prepares administrative reports, testifies in court as a witness in connection to the work performed, and has supervisory and administrative responsibility for a shift in the Crime Scene Section.

Requirements:

  • Requires four years of experience in crime scene processing or a related forensic discipline including two years at the level of Crime Scene Specialist III or its equivalent in a lead capacity
  • A bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, forensic science, criminal justice, or a related field
  • An equivalent combination of relevant experience and education may be considered.
  • Professional certification from the International Association for Identification or the American Board of Criminalistics is preferred.
  • Positions in the Police Department must meet the polygraph and background standards that are appropriate to non-sworn positions. The general factors for disqualification are listed at www.phoenix.gov/police/pdjob_civildisq.html
  • Working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings may be required.

Candidates will be required to demonstrate the ability to perform job-related tasks as part of the Police Department?s selection process. Candidates will also be required to obtain one of the following professional certifications within 9 months from the date of hire:

International Association of Identification:

  • Crime Scene Technician (CST)
  • Crime Scene Investigation (CSI)
  • Crime Scene Analyst (CSA)
  • Senior Crime Scene Analyst (SCSA)
  • Bloodstain Pattern Analysis
  • Forensic Photography

American Board of Criminalistics:

  • Technical Specialist (S-ABC)
  • Diplomate (D-ABC)
  • Fellow (F-ABC)
