Forensic Investigator Garland, Texas Police Department

Duties: To perform professional processing of crime scenes in an attempt to document all facets of a crime thereby providing a solid framework for the reconstruction of the crime. To establish the sequence of events involved in the crime, determine where, when and how the crime was committed as well as who committed the crime. To utilize natural sciences (Chemistry, Physics, Anatomy, Biology, etc.) plus mathematics to establish the facts of the case and then testify about them in court.
Essential Job Functions: Locates, documents, marks, and collects physical evidence. Ensuring the chain of custody of evidence is maintained. Associates persons to the scene of the crime. Completes detailed sketches of the crime scene. Takes accurate measurements of the crime scene. Reconstructs the crime scene. Other duties as assigned.
Preferred Knowledge - Abilities & Skills: Knowledge of math, biology, chemistry, and related sciences as they relate to crime scenes.
Licenses & Certification : Valid State of Texas Class C Driver's License.
Physical Tasks & Working Condition : The incumbent works typically in an indoor and outdoor environment and may be subjected to extremes of heat, cold, rain, site hazards, noise, wetness, insects, noxious odors, fumes, body fluids, processing chemicals, climbing, walking, stooping and bending. The incumbent may require the use of special equipment (fuming wand, fuming chambers, alternate light source, electrostatic dust print lifter) or special techniques (casting materials, blood spatter analysis, hand washings, chemical processing, bullet trajectory analysis, etc.). Subject to shifts as assigned with periodic overtime as required and infrequent mandatory overtime as required. Subject also to weekends, holiday, and/or extended shifts.

Requirements: Bachelor's Degree in a Natural Science field and no experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience including a minimum of two years AFIS/Fingerprint Comparison experience.
