Duties: Performs expert fingerprint analysis but may be required to assist in other forensic disciplines such as, drug chemistry, DNA, trace evidence and ballistics; Performs fingerprint development procedures to include brush/powder techniques, cyanoacrylate (Super Glue) fuming, and sequential chemical processing (DFO, ninhydrin, physical developer) in a laboratory setting or in the field at a crime scene; documents and preserves developed fingerprints; may examine physical evidence not necessarily related to fingerprints such as impression evidence, trace evidence, blood evidence, biological substances, forensic imaging, computer forensics, DNA, or other forensic evidence as the capabilities of the Crime Lab expand; prepares courtroom charts and exhibits as they relate to the identification of fingerprint evidence, as well as preparing other exhibits for courtroom use as required; testifies to the technique used to develop, compare and identify fingerprints, as well as to the examination procedures and results concerning non-fingerprint evidence as described above; retrieves evidence to be fingerprinted and re-packages those items already fingerprinted; dictates reports documenting processing efforts and the appropriate lab results; in addition, performs grant administrative work to include researching and filing reports with the Department of Justice along with other Crime Lab administrative duties; attends on-going training in order to maintain the necessary level of expertise and proficiency in one or more areas of the forensic disciplines named above; maintains laboratory equipment and inventory to ensure its proper functioning and calibration and keeps the lab orderly and presentable at all times.
Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree in chemistry, physics, biology or forensic science or other highly related field; minimum of one year of experience working in a forensic lab setting handling physical evidence; Highly prefer a minimum of one year of work experience in fingerprint examination and analysis to include work experience with AFIS (Automated Fingerprint Identification Systems) and fingerprint image enhancement software.
Knowledge of: Federal and State laws, regulations and guidelines relating to criminal law and procedures, specifically criminal evidence law; proper evidence handling and packaging and chemical formulation and preparation; proper procedures and standard laboratory rules and safety precautions regarding chemical, toxins and biological substances; AFIS and fingerprint imaging enhancement software.
Ability to: Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, other law enforcement agencies, court personnel and the general public; present complex information in an effective manner to audiences of varying sizes; analyze facts, exercise sound judgment and coordinate efforts to resolve problems; assess and prioritize work effectively; follow verbal and written instructions; make accurate observations and records of test results; use various computer systems as it relates to fingerprint examination and analysis, specifically Adobe Photo Shop and FORAY Technologies Imaging System utilizing the Authenticated Digital Asset Management System; readily learn and apply the various methods and techniques involved in the scientific analysis of evidence; work effectively with chemical and biological hazards; capture, document and develop fingerprints using timed exposures and alternative light source usage; see, hear and remember people, evidence, facts and circumstances; bend, crouch, stoop, stretch or crawl periodically as needed.
Skill in: Macro photography; dealing with stressful situations; oral and written communications.
Must have a valid driver’s license.
