Forensic Services Supervisor Durham, North Carolina Police Department
Salary: $45,427.00 – $72,683.00

Duties: Responsible for supervising crime scene personnel assigned to the Forensic Services Unit. Monitors and assists with crime scene processing of major cases. Prepares and ensures that standard operating procedures are followed in regards to evidence collection and chain of custody procedures. Assists in preparing the yearly budget and ensures necessary supplies, training and equipment are purchased and maintained. Prepares reports, proposals and quarterly performance evaluations on personnel assigned to the unit in accordance with department and city policy. Serves as a liaison between the Forensic Unit and other agency divisions, law enforcement agencies and the public.
Position Accountabilities
The following are essential job accountabilities:
- Supervises operational activity of assigned personnel.
- Observes and records the performance of assigned personnel.
- Provides liaison with the Durham County Sheriff's Department, the Duke University Police Department, the North Carolina Central University Police Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the State Bureau of Investigation; as well as other law enforcement agencies concerning forensic matters.
- Coordinates forensic classroom instruction for police officers and outside agencies upon request. Approves and schedules unit personnel for training opportunities.
- Assists and monitors unit personnel on major crime scene investigations and evidence/property issues; provides courtroom testimony.
- Reviews and approves reports and case files.
- Assists in preparation of yearly budget; orders and ensures maintenance of equipment.
- Periodically inspects the Forensic Services Unit’s records, inventory and equipment.
- Prepares work schedules and ensures coverage of shifts.
- Counsels employees on job performance and career development.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
Requirements:
Minimum Education:
- Associates Degree required; Bachelor’s degree in the field of Forensics, Criminalistics, Biology, Chemistry, or a closely related field is preferred; and;
Minimum Experience:
- Five years experience in the field of forensics and/or crime scene investigation, including at least one year experience in leading the work of others.
Special Requirements:
- Must possess a valid NC Class C Driver’s License by hire date. Because of the confidential, sensitive nature of work required, successful completion of a background investigation is required. Candidates given a conditional job offer will be required to successfully complete a psychological evaluation, drug test, polygraph and medical examinations.
Knowledge:
- North Carolina General Statutes.
- Applicable Federal, State, and local laws and ordinances.
- Evidence chain of custody procedures and requirements.
- Forensics and Crime Scene Investigation practices and procedures.
Skills:
- Microsoft Office Suites and other computer software packages.
Abilities:
- Maintain records.
- Research, prepare and present reports.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Handle highly confidential and sensitive information with sound judgment and discretion.
- Supervise, praise and discipline employees.
- Available 24/7 on-call status.
- Facilitate meetings, presentations and trainings.
- Prepare work schedules.
- Attend daily, weekly and monthly meetings with department staff.
- Attend yearly training.
- Compile new guidelines and procedures as necessary.
- Prepares and conducts hiring processes for forensic positions
