Criminalist I / II San Mateo County, CA Sheriff’s Forensic Laboratory
Salary: $5,470.40 - $8,515.87 monthly A 2.5% pay differential is also given for IAI Crime Scene Certification and another 5.0% for ABC or AFTE Certification.

Duties: The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office Forensic Laboratory located in San Mateo, California, which was newly constructed in March 2003 and accredited by the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors-Laboratory Accreditation Board in September 2005 has one immediate vacancy for a Criminalist. The successful candidate for this position must have knowledge of general criminalistics and a good understanding of one or more of the following: Forensic Biology, Controlled Substances, Trace, and Blood/Breath Alcohol Testing.
Requirements:
- Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify as a Criminalist I: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a major in criminalistics, chemistry or a related physical science. Criminalist II: Three years of experience in the practice of criminalistics, which has included experience in collecting, analyzing and evaluating physiological fluids, controlled substances and other physical evidence gathered from crime scenes.
- Knowledge of: Current forensic methods and techniques used in the analysis and evaluation of physical evidence likely to be used in a court case; various types of equipment found in a forensic laboratory; courtroom procedures and testimony; recent developments, literature and sources of information relative to criminalistics; and principles of photography.
- Skill/Ability to: Performing physical and chemical tests commonly used in the analysis of physical evidence; using a wide variety of equipment including infrared spectrophotometers, gas chromatograph, and various types of microscopes and cameras; understanding and carrying out detailed, highly technical oral and written instructions; communicating verbally; and writing clear, concise reports and correspondence.
- Other Requirements: Participation in the Laboratory’s on-call crime scene rotation schedule. Pass a detailed background investigation and pre-employment medical exam prior to appointment.

The examination process will consist of a panel interview (weight: 100%). Depending on the number of applicants a screening committee may select those applicants whose education and/or experience appear to best meet the needs of the position. Because of this process, not all applicants are guaranteed advancement through the exam process. All exams will be given in San Mateo County, California and applicants must participate at their own expense.
