ISP Forensic Scientist 1 Idaho State Police
Salary: $21.44 - $23.52 per hour

Duties: The Forensic Scientist 1 is an entry-level position, which will work under the direct supervision of a more experienced Forensic Scientist. The Forensic Scientist 1 position converts to a Forensic Scientist 2 position upon successful completion of a specified training program and two (2) years in the Forensic Scientist 1 position. An experienced scientist who meets the minimum qualifications and *qualifying work experience of a Forensic Scientist 2 will be certified upon completion of a qualifying examination and the six-month probationary period. Pay will be adjusted accordingly at the time the incumbent is certified as a Forensic Scientist 2.
*Qualifying work experience for the Forensic Scientist 2 includes a minimum of two (2) years working independently, planning, managing, and prioritizing caseloads; successfully engaging in independent research, evaluation, and validation activities; performing and documenting a range of examinations regarding forensic evidence; providing training and consultation services to professional criminal justice and scientific audiences; and testifying as an expert regarding forensic examinations, as applicable.
These positions will be trained to specialize in the Toxicology discipline. General responsibilities are as follows:
- Employ methods of scientific analysis to make determinations regarding evidentiary samples submitted as evidence in criminal cases
- Interpret scientific data and ensure validity, and develop and issue laboratory reports
- Maintain established standards of laboratory cleanliness, safety, and efficiency
- Work closely with advanced forensic scientists to acquire new skills and improve techniques
- Provide detailed explanations/testimony regarding the methods of analysis performed, and communicate and support the results of analysis
- Respond to crime scenes as needed
- Testify as an expert witness regarding results
- Please note: The candidate chosen for the position in the Coeur d'Alene Laboratory will also receive training in Firearms/Toolmarks and, once fully qualified, will have Firearms/Toolmarks responsibilities in addition to Toxicology. To be successful as a Forensic Scientist you must be a self starter, possess good organization skills, and be detail oriented.
Requirements:
- A baccalaureate or advanced degree in chemistry, biology, forensic science, or closely related field that is substantially an equivalent. Coursework must include general chemistry, organic chemistry, and quantitative analysis.
- NOTE: The successful candidate is required to obtain certification by the American Board of Criminalistics within three (3) years of being hired (if not currently certified).
In order to be accepted for the position of ISP Forensic Scientist 1, you must have the requisite degree as described above.
Ranking Items: The following are not minimum requirements for this position. If you do have experience in any of these areas, be sure to include them on your resume as it may increase your score:
Masters or Doctorate degree in chemistry, biology, forensic science, or closely related field that is substantially an equivalent
Experience working as a scientist in a professional laboratory environment
Experience working as a scientist in a forensic laboratory
Experience performing independent study/research activities
Work study or internship experience in a clinical or forensic laboratory
Certification with the American Board of Criminalistics
Certification with ABFT or FTCB
