Duties: This position is responsible for the planning, development, supervision, and administration of the Crime Scene Response Section (CSRS) of the Police Department. General supervision is exercised over the work of sworn supervisors and both sworn and non-sworn crime scene specialists in various forensic disciplines. The objectives to be accomplished are preparation of the yearly budget, renewal of Interlocal agreement with the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Science (county lab), continuation of a formal field training and evaluation program, and compliance with environmental mandates.

The Forensic Services Administrator is responsible for: 2 police Lieutenants, 7 Sergeants, 28 sworn Detectives (person’s crimes), 2 Crime Scene Analysts (non-sworn equivalent to Detective), 19 Crime Technicians (property crimes), an AFIS unit comprised of 5 sworn Detectives and 3 non-sworn personnel, 4 office assistants, a forensic video specialist and a photographic technician.

The Dallas Police Department utilizes the services of the county lab – the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences (SWIFS) – for processing of DNA evidence and specialized evidence testing. CSRS has a lab area at police headquarters which allows for basic evidence processing. The main focus of the CSRS is evidence recognition / seizure, latent fingerprint development and photographic documentation of crime scenes.

Requirements: Nine (9) years progressively responsible experience as a criminalist or crime scene investigator in a recognized crime laboratory/crime scene unit actively engaged in forensic sciences. 3-5 years experience as a supervisor in a crime laboratory/crime scene unit. Advanced degree (Masters) in specified field may substitute for 2 years work experience. Bachelor’s Degree in natural science (Chemistry, Biology, Physics) or Criminalistics/Forensic Science; Experience in ASCLD/LAB accredited laboratory is preferred.
