Crime Scene Investigator

Salary: $23.91 to 28.85 per hour to start

Duties:

  1. Ability to perform crime scene evidence search collection which includes coordinating with investigators to insure collection, identification, evaluation, and preservation of all evidence of criminal activity, documenting findings according to established procedures in reports legally sufficient for court or other formal legal proceedings, maintaining records of activity, and testifying in court on evidence or crime scene technique.
  2. Ability to perform ten-print comparisons for identification purposes and making AFIS latent inquiries.
  3. Ability to recover and preserve developed latent prints using appropriate physical, optical, or electronic techniques and equipment, including ultraviolet, laser and other special forensic photographic procedures as well as digital computer scanning devices.
  4. Ability to perform scientific and comparative analysis using chemical sequencing of evidence, forensic photography, operating laboratory equipment such as alternate light sources, AFIS and other equipment.
  5. Ability to maintain an accurate inventory of all supplies and equipment.
  6. Ability to assist in planning and implementing programs for schools and occasionally participating as an instructor on crime scene techniques.
  7. Ability to testify as an expert witness on evidence or crime scene techniques.
  8. Ability to perform other related duties as required or directed.
  9. Ability to analyze and interpret latent prints, making positive identifications, a negative comparison or determining a print is of no value for comparison purposes; ability to compare latent friction ridge structure to known individuals to determine identity.
  10. Ability to write reports concerning analysis and interpretation performed; prepares court photographic enlargements for jury illustrations; testifies in court as to processing for latent prints, and identification or non-identified comparisons.
  11. Ability to maintain a working knowledge of forensic photography, laser technology and safety procedures; ability to provide training on the proper method of taking inked finger prints and the collection and preservation of physical evidence.

Requirements: This position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Forensic Science or any related field plus a MINIMUM of two years CSI experience. It is PREFFERED the candidate have their certification by the International Association of Identification (IAI) as any of the following: Certified Crime Scene Investigator (CCSI), Certified Crime Scene Analyst (CCSA) or Certified Senior Crime Scene Analyst (CSCSA).

Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Knowledge of ASCLD-LAB accreditation procedures
  • Knowledge of crime scene evidence and collecting techniques and record keeping systems.
  • Knowledge of fingerprint classification, coding techniques and equipment.
  • Knowledge of the preservation of physical evidence.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations applicable to handling of body fluids and hazardous materials.
  • Skill in preparing high quality crime scene diagrams.
  • Skill to draw, print and trace materials in a neat and clear manner
  • Skill in developing and drawing effective visual presentations of data from narrative descriptions, field measurements, etc.
  • Skill in operation, calibration and maintenance of crime scene equipment.
  • Ability to input information into mainframe and personal computer systems, access and retrieve information.
  • Ability to maintain accurate detailed records and prepare clear, concise written reports.
  • Ability to maintain an effective working relationship with other city employees and citizenry.
  • Ability to respond to emergency situations on an on-call basis.
  • Ability to work and maintain composure in violent and/or death scene investigations.
  • Ability to receive detailed information through oral and written communication.
  • Ability to perform a variety of physical skills including, but not limited to seeing, carrying, stooping and writing.
  • Ability to move items weighing up to 200 pounds on an occasional basis, to lift items weighing 100 lbs.; and to push/pull items 35 lbs. for 150 feet.
  • Ability to operate a variety of office equipment including but not limited to cameras, laser print finder, generator, personal computer and two-way radio.
  • Ability to operate a motorized vehicle.
  • Ability to work in both indoor and outdoor environments.
