Crime Scene Investigator City of Newport Beach, California
Salary: $4,149 to $5,838 per month

Duties: Under the general supervision of a Detective Lieutenant, Detective Sergeant, Senior Crime Scene Investigator and the functional supervision of sworn police staff, the Crime Scene Investigator identifies, collects, preserves and processes physical evidence at crime scenes, prepares appropriate reports, and testifies in court. This position involves work on rotating shifts including weekends and holidays. Crime Scene Investigators are subject to extended shifts when required and call out on a 24-hour basis, 365 days per year.
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Recognize, preserve and collect physical evidence at crime scenes; operate and use equipment common to crime scene investigation such as latent fingerprint brushes, powders and chemical developers, various computers and computer programs, cameras, recorders and various chemicals to develop, preserve and process evidence; operate photographic, video and electronic imaging and image processing equipment as well as other office equipment necessary to complete tasks in a timely manner; measure and diagram accurately, prepare charts, graphs or exhibits for investigation or court presentation; collect, classify, identify and compare fingerprints; prepare and implement training for Department personnel; testify in court or other proceedings without being subject to impeachment due to character, reputation, history of dishonesty, and violations of law including excessive drug violations; prepare accurate and grammatically correct investigative reports; speak clearly and distinctly; communicate effectively in oral and written environments; be able to effectively use a police radio and other communication equipment; drive a city vehicle safely and respond to crime scenes or to other assignments; lift, carry, drag, push and pull objects of various weights and sizes; stand, walk and climb over various distances and obstructions; take direction from supervisors; maintain good working relationships with other members of the Department, City and other allied agencies; accept criticism and apply to performance; be dependable in meeting scheduled assignments; work extended hours when required; maintain confidential information and refuse to participate in or tolerate unethical behavior; perform related duties as assigned and required.
Requirements: Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. Prior crime scene investigation or criminalist experience is highly desirable.
A working knowledge of basic procedures as they relate to evidence collection, basic principles of physical science and courtroom testimony and demeanor. The ability to gather and analyze data and prepare comprehensive reports; work creatively and collaboratively; exercise sound independent judgment within established procedural guidelines; handle stressful or sensitive situations with tact and diplomacy; analyze problems and develop logical solutions; appear for work on time; understand and follow posted work rules and procedures; accept constructive criticism and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
Education/Training: High school graduation or possession of a G.E.D. At least two years of criminal justice, criminalistics, physical sciences or related college level coursework from an accredited college is required. Extensive experience and professional training may substitute for formal education.

The most successful candidates taking the written examination will then be scheduled for an oral interview. An eligibility list will be certified to the Police Chief. Prior to a conditional offer of appointment, the selection process will include a detailed background investigation, polygraph examination, fingerprinting and administrative review. Upon receipt of a conditional job offer, the candidate will be required to take a comprehensive medical examination, which includes drug and alcohol screening.
