Duties: ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS include, but limited to: Performs crime scene investigations for the Police Department, collects evidence, provides testimony in court, performs various laboratory examinations of evidence, and other duties as assigned. Responds to the scene of field investigations to perform the technical investigation of criminal and non-criminal scenes related to the identification, documentation, collection, preservation and utilization of physical evidence. Performs laboratory examinations of evidence, including specialized processing involving physical, chemical, optical and digital techniques. Obtains non-testimonial evidence, including hairs, fibers, saliva, blood and other items from victims, suspects and dead bodies. Prepares digital composite likenesses for criminal investigations. May prepare graphic representations and scale drawings for criminal and non-criminal investigations. Prepares detailed reports of activities performed during laboratory and scene investigations. Will attend post-mortem examinations to collect desired evidence. Performs aerial and forensic imagery, as assigned. Provides testimony on forensic investigation and laboratory techniques in legal and administrative hearings. Will be scheduled as criminalist on-call for the unit (24 hours per day, usually one week at a time) and will be asked, on occasion, to respond to investigations while off duty and not on-call. Attends classes and training sessions to upgrade abilities and develop expertise within one or more forensic disciplines. Assists in the research and/or development of new laboratory techniques. Assists in the performance of the duties of the Imaging Specialist, in their absence or unavailability. Assists in preparing and presenting training, lectures, or video presentations to the Department and other agencies. Participates in professional organizations to include teaching and lecturing when appropriate. Teaches CSI classes as well as courses at the Lakewood Police Academy. Fingerprints and photographs arrestees. Performs non-investigatory fingerprinting and photography. Conducts facility tours. Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements: ESSENTIAL: A minimum of one-year full-time experience in crime scene investigation. Specific training in crime scene investigations, photography, fingerprinting, latent print development or related skills. Current certification or obtain certification as a Crime Scene Investigator (CSI) under the certification program of the International Association of Identification within the probationary period. To obtain certification, one must meet certification requirements at the time of hire. Certification must be maintained for the duration of employment. Ability to conduct a detailed and complete crime scene investigation by locating, documenting, collecting, preserving, analyzing and interpreting all types of physical evidence. Requires knowledge of proper handling procedures regarding protection, collection and storage of hazardous materials in compliance with MSDS. A one-year probation is required. Ability to secure a valid Colorado driver’s license, as well as possess a good driving record. Ability to successfully complete a polygraph examination, background investigation and reference checks, as well as vision (including color blindness) and hearing tests.
PREFERRED: Two years of college (60 semester credit hours or the equivalent) with a Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
