Duties: Criminalist is the entry, training and sub journey level in the series. Criminalists perform routine and less complex technical laboratory analyses and assist higher-level Criminalists in the examination of crime scenes and in the scientific investigation of crimes. Criminalists work in Department of Justice laboratories throughout California, including Richmond DNA, Ripon, Chico, Eureka, Freedom, Fresno, Redding, Riverside, Santa Barbara, Sacramento and Santa Rosa.
Requirements: Equivalent to graduation from college with a major in one of the physical or biological sciences, including the equivalent of eight semester hours of general chemistry and three semester hours of quantitative analysis. Approved majors include chemistry, biochemistry, biology, physics, geology, mineralogy, petrology, chemical engineering, forensic science, pharmacology, microbiology, molecular biology, biological sciences, immunology, entomology and criminalistics. Registered seniors, and graduates who do not possess the 3 semester hours of quantitative analysis, will be admitted to the examination, but all requirements must be fulfilled before appointment.
