Identification Technician

Duties: This is skilled, technical fingerprint and photographic work in the Forensic Identification Unit of the Police Department. Work assignments are at two sites- the Arlington County Police Department Headquarters and the Northern Virginia Regional Identification System (NOVARIS) facility in Fairfax, Virginia. The candidate is responsible for processing, maintaining, analyzing and comparing latent finger and palm prints; classifying, searching and filing inked fingerprints using the Henry System; processing evidence for fingerprint residue using various powders and chemicals and using photography to preserve latent print evidence. Specific duties include: manual comparison of latent print impressions with known finger and palm prints; encoding inked and latent prints into a regional computerized fingerprint system; processing inked/live scan fingerprints to confirm identity; evaluating latent print impressions (crime scene) collected as evidence; processing evidence for latent impressions; processing film and preparing materials for court presentation; testifying as an expert witness in fingerprint identification; performing other duties as required.

Requirements: Minimum: High School Diploma or equivalent, plus three years of experience in classifying, searching and identifying fingerprints using the Henry Classification System, including one year in latent fingerprint identification. Substitution: Additional directly related experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis. Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following: a) additional latent print identification experience; b) experience in court testimony as it relates to latent fingerprint identifications; c) experience using the Printrak 2000 AFIS for latent print and known print entry; and/or d) experience with digital photography and associated computer software such as PowerPoint and Adobe Photoshop.
