Criminalist Supervisor

Salary: $4,046 to $5,908 / month

Duties: Will supervisor, train, assign work, schedule and evaluate the performance of assigned personnel; make hiring, dismissal, and disciplinary recommendations; monitor operation and work activities on assigned shift; ensure that fingerprint requests and laboratory requests are performed; respond to Police shootings and other incidents; review records, forms, and standardized reports prepared by subordinate employees; Assume command of the Crime Scene Investigative Unit functions at a major crime scene; perform a variety of complex, independent laboratory tests, analyses, classifications, comparisons, and identifications of all types of physical evidence from crime scenes.

Examine and evaluate evidence, and determine techniques and procedures to be used in the development of latent prints on diverse items of physical evidence; preserve and/or photograph developed latent print evidence, and make necessary comparisons with known inked impressions; obtain legible friction-ridge impressions of known and unknown deceased persons; receive and return evidence; guarantee and maintain the accepted chain of custody; interpret analytical testimony, and compose technical reports; testify as an expert witness in court; research forensic science field, and study current material in forensic journals regarding new advances and techniques in latent print examination; make periodic equipment checks to ensure that all equipment is being properly maintained; monitor the pager 24 hours, 7 days a week, unless on approved leave.

Requirements: Thorough understanding of how the AFIS works required; knowledge of the rules of evidence, criminal court proceedings, and proper safety and disinfecting procedures to be used at crime scenes; knowledge of fingerprint terminology; documented experience as a latent examiner and crime-scene examiner; working knowledge of other types of light sources; effective written and oral communication skills required; ability to make simple mathematical calculations; able to use a PC, using Microsoft Word and the ability to learn other software applications; skilled in the use of photographic equipment and the Automated Fingerprint Identification System.

High school graduate (or GED) with college degree in Forensic Science or related field preferred. Minimum of five (5) years training and have completed courses in crime scene investigation, and latent fingerprint examination and comparison, to include: Basic Crime Scene School, Basic Crime Scene Photography School, Advanced Crime Scene Photography School, Basic Latent Fingerprints School, Advanced Latent Fingerprints School, Basic Blood Spatter School, AFIS training and State approved for AFIS use (this is in house).

Three (3) years of experience with the Plano Police Department Crime Scene Investigative Unit and/or a college degree in a related field, or six (6) years of experience with another law enforcement agency with emphasis on Crime Scene Investigations and latent fingerprint examination. Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above minimum qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.
