Salary: $4,289 - $5,314 per month

Duties: Respond to crime scenes to search for evidence such as fingerprints, footprints and other physical and trace evidence; take photographs of crime scenes, traffic collisions, suspects, or evidence; collects and preserve evidence, including chemical processing; take physical measurements and diagrams for criminal and non-criminal cases; identify and compare fingerprints and palm prints; prepare exhibits and testify in court as to fingerprint/palm comparisons and evidence collection; use and operate a video camera and equipment when necessary at crime scenes and for miscellaneous public relations and training purposes; search the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) to identify latent prints; and, perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements: Requires completion of HS/equivalent, plus knowledge of police identification techniques and procedures; photography; fingerprinting; fingerprint comparisons and crime scene investigation; use of video equipment; and, how to file evidence and confiscate property and ability to communicate effectively, work with minimum supervision; prepare related technical material; and, maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the performance of duties. A combination of education, training and/or experience that would likely provide the knowledge and ability to successfully perform the duties of the position is qualifying. Typical combinations may include: 12 mths full-time work experience as a Forensic Specialist with duties, but not limited to, crime scene investigations, crime scene photography, evidence collection, latent print comparisons, latent print development, and court testimony -OR- knowledge of identification techniques and procedures with 12 mths of full-time work experience in latent print comparison or 10 finger inputting into the AFIS system or fingerprint classification -OR- the completion of a recognized forensic identification program affiliated with a 2 to 4 year college curriculum with emphasis in, but not limited to, crime scene investigations, crime scene photography, evidence collection, latent print comparisons, and latent print development. Proof of the applicant’s completion of this program must accompany the Application for Employment. A valid CA DL and an acceptable driving record plus the ability and availability to work evening, weekend and holidays work hours is required.
