Duties: Visually and physically examines and investigates all types of crime scenes for the recognition, collection, preservation and presentation of physical evidence such as latent fingerprints, shoeprints, tire tracks, body fluids, hair and fibers, weapons (including handling live firearms), and other materials in stressful and unpleasant environments. Recognizes hazardous and emergency situations. Measures and diagrams crime scenes. Prepares and utilizes various chemicals, powders, casting materials and compounds used in the field to test and/or recover latent, biological or other evidence. Photographs various types of crime scenes and evidence; processes for latent fingerprints using various powders; casts shoe impressions and other evidence preserving techniques as required. Prepares detailed, well-organized reports using a computer. Conducts interviews in person and over the phone with victims, detectives and the public to gain relevant information. Testifies in court. Wears a uniform and patrols the City operating a police motor vehicle. Responds to crime scenes quickly utilizing map reading and geography skills. Uses MDC, two-way radio, and computer.
An outstanding opportunity to provide technical support to Police Officers and the Forensic Services Division in the investigation of crime scenes by examining, photographing, collecting, preserving and presentation of evidence. This civilian position reports to the Crime Scene Specialist Supervisor within the Administrative Services Bureau. Work is performed in the field for persons as well as property crimes. We are seeking individuals with strong interpersonal skills, sound decision-making skills, and a self-starter with a commitment to quality. This position requires working shifts that may include evenings and/or nights (overnight), weekends (Saturdays and Sundays) and holidays. Working overtime and the ability to be on call one week at a time on a rotating schedule is required for this position. Requirements: Requires a minimum of two years of full-time experience in crime scene processing, or an Associates Degree in crime scene technology, criminalistics, or a closely related field with coursework in crime scene technology. It is highly desirable that the successful completion of an internship with a police agency conducting actual crime scene processing is included in the educational background. The completion of an approved basic fingerprint classification course, police training in crime scene processing and crime scene photography are preferred. Other combinations of education and training, which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the essential functions of this position may be substituted. Strong written and verbal communications skills and experience working with the public is required. Must be able to read a street map, and navigate a government vehicle to locations both within and outside City limits. Must be able to handle multiple projects simultaneously, work alone and with other co-workers, and demonstrate good judgment in prioritizing work assignments. Must be able to learn job-related material through an intensive field-training program, which will require trainee to perform tasks under the direction of a field trainer. Job related material includes all procedures, policies, and training manuals, as well as any other training material designated by the trainer or Crime Scene Supervisor. The trainee will be required to move between trainers, so that they are exposed to as many crime scenes as possible, and be exposed to as many environments as possible, which will include various shift times and days off. Must be able to demonstrate competency in required tasks prior to being released from the field training program. Requires a valid Arizona Driver’s License with no major driving violations within the last 39 months and be physically capable of operating a motor vehicle safely. Must be able to stand or sit for extended periods of time as well as bend, stoop, or pick up objects to perform job tasks, in all kinds of weather conditions. Must be able to move or drag up to 165 pounds and carry up to 50 pounds, without assistance. Must be able to utilize a two-way radio using clear and concise verbal communication. Must be able to utilize an in-vehicle computer and obtain necessary information for handling crime scenes.
