Forensic Specialist Trainee

Salary: $2,153.06 per month

Duties: Position supports the Abilene Police Department by obtaining and managing physical evidence in criminal cases including photographing; obtaining, analyzing and identifying prints; analyzing handwriting; gathering physical and trace evidence; preparing sketches of crime scenes; and other related technical duties as required in coordination with investigators. Work is frequently performed in unpleasant crime and accident scenes; in a laboratory setting; under pressure; and in settings that require the ability to visually compare minute details without fatigue during both day and night time lighting. Excellent computer skills and the ability to operate a variety of tools and equipment are essential. Will interpret and apply Federal, State, City and departmental laws, policies and procedures and independently perform a full range of police evidence investigative activities when fully trained. Will provide written and verbal documentation for courtroom testimony.

Requirements: Working conditions may include sitting, standing, walking, kneeling, crouching, stooping, squatting, crawling, twisting, climbing, confined work spaces, lifting up to 25 lbs., exposure to both indoor and outdoor elements, working with chemicals, and working varied shifts and/or weekends. Valid Texas drivers’ license, or the ability to obtain, and a good driving record are required. Career advancement opportunities are available depending upon experience, education and certifications: Trainee level requires either a HS/GED diploma and a minimum of 2 years work experience in the criminal justice field or in a laboratory setting or a 4 year degree. Specialist I requires meeting the requirements for a Trainee, 6 month’s of satisfactory work experience in a position equivalent to the Forensic Specialist Trainee, and the satisfactory completion of the Basic Latent Print Coursework which meets International Association for Identification (IAI) standards. Specialist II requires 2 years of work experience equivalent to the Forensic Specialist I in the criminal justice field or a related laboratory setting; a HS/GED; and the satisfactory completion of the Intermediate and Advanced Latent Print Coursework which meets IAI standards. Specialist III requires a combination of experience and training sufficient to meet the IAI certification requirements for Latent Print Examiner; requires possession of IAI Latent Print Examiner Certification; and the successful completion of the Secret Service Questioned Document course.
